A trail runner crosses the bridge over Big Walnut Creek.

The hike then joins the paved Alum Creek Greenway. This path attracts trail runners, bicyclists, and daily exercisers, many with determined looks on their faces. The greenway spans Alum Creek on a high bridge, delivering a different perspective on the stream below. Soon you are off the greenway and on the Confluence Trail. This natural-surface path heads upstream along Alum Creek, reaching the three-creek confluence from the west bank of Alum. You can clearly see where you were earlier. From there cruise up Alum Creek, looking for more wildflowers in season under more big cottonwood trees. This is favorable deer habitat.

Rejoin the Alum Creek Greenway just before it passes under I-270. Continue up the paved path, passing alternate parking at Madison Mills. The walking has been easy thus far and the trend continues, with little elevation change. The Heron Pond area presents alternate parking and a spur loop that circles the pond. The hike continues north to reach the Sycamore Fields Trail. Take this asphalt path to circle a meadow after bridging Alum Creek. You then backtrack, staying with the greenway past its intersection with the Confluence Trail. Travel beneath big cottonwoods and beside small ponds. Cross Alum Creek one last time, returning almost to the trailhead before spurring off to circle around one last aquatic feature—Turtle Pond. Rejoin the greenway and end your hiking adventure.
